Hello from Tuscany!

The last time I left off we were in Nice. The last day in Nice we traveled to Cannes where the famous film festival is held (see pictures in previous blog). We had escargot at lunch and had an afternoon at the beach. At the beach we were met by local students ready to swim with us, play handball and volleyball, and serve us dinner. most of you don't know that this was my birthday and you're students were very sweet! They sang Happy Birthday and gave me a card.

Yesterday we traveled from Nice through Monaco to Montecatini, Italy. Monaco is very lavish! We saw the prince's residence and the tomb of Grace Kelly in a cathedral. Then we made the long drive to Montecatini. We arrived here around sunset as the bus drove up the side of a hill. The road was filled with switcbacks and the driver had to honk before going around each hairpin turn. This was the first time we heard the coach's horn and it was the funniest sounding horn for a bus that big! We all laughed each time he sounded the horn and even though he doesn't speak English he understood why we were laughing and continued to honk the horn as much as possible! Upon arriving at our hotel we found it to be on the side of this mountain with views of looking over the town below. All the students gatherd on the balcony of our villa to watch the town as the sunset. It was really beautiful!

By the way, the food in Italy is way better then it was in France!

Today we woke up to the same great view and traveled to Pisa. We left our coach in a parking lot and traveled by local bus to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We weren't able to climb the tower due to restrictions on large groups. We visited the cathedral that was there and then had free time to walk around the local shops and take funny pictures of the Leaning Tower. After lunch we got back on a local bus that took us back to our coach and drove the one hour to Florence. First we went to the Galleria dell'Accademia. Here we saw many paintings from churches that have been town down and spent time learning about Michaelangelo's David. The David was enormous! He's almost 15 feet tall and up on a pedestal. He really looks alive and could just walk off the pedestal. The students were amazed at how realistic he looked. After that we walked through he city of Florence passing by the Duomo and the Bronze doors of the Baptistery known as the Golden Gate to Paradise. We also saw the replica of David out in the square. Students had free time to walk around all the shops and many students and I bought gelato because it was very hot. We then had dinner and caught the bus back to our hotel.

Tomorrow morning we are driving to Rome and in the afternoon we will see the Vatican, St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. Thanks to all the parents and loved ones who have commented on this blog. I try to pass all your messages along. We might not have internet for the next two nights.

Ciao!

Kate
